Prime Minister of Pakistan has given approval for the establishment of a Digital Communication Department. Primary goal of this new initiative is to counter anti-state narratives and enhance the government’s capacity to detect and respond to digital security challenges.

The creation of this department is in direct response to growing concerns over the spread of misinformation and hostile online content that can undermine national security. By leveraging modern technology and expert analysis, the Digital Communication Department will focus on crafting and disseminating counter-narratives to neutralize harmful propaganda and influence perceptions both domestically and internationally.

In addition to countering online threats, the department will be tasked with monitoring online activities in real time. This proactive approach aims to identify and mitigate potential risks before they escalate, ensuring a quicker and more effective response to any digital security challenges. By enhancing its ability to detect digital threats, the government seeks to protect the integrity of national security in the evolving digital landscape.

To support this initiative, the government has allocated funds for the department’s establishment. A total of 54 positions have been created within the Digital Communication Department, underscoring the scale and importance of the project. Sources disclosed that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has requested Rs. 530 million to begin operations. The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) is expected to approve the release of these funds on December 19, allowing the department to move forward with its mission.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening its digital infrastructure and improving its ability to manage the growing threats posed by online misinformation, cyber-attacks, and other digital security issues. As the digital domain becomes an increasingly important arena for national security, the creation of the Digital Communication Department represents a crucial step in safeguarding Pakistan’s interests in the digital age.
