Pakistan at 75: LSE Summit in 2022

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of Pakistan’s birth and independence, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Pakistan Summit will be held at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in 2022.

‘Pakistan@75’ will feature panel discussions on law, economics, development, and Pakistan’s changing future with eminent Pakistani and international thought leaders. The event is free to attend, but registration is required.

10.45 am: DECOLONISING LAW FOR A MODERN PAKISTAN

SPEAKERS: Dame Maura McGowan, judge of the Supreme Court of England and Wales, Dr. Amber Darr, advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, and Barrister Salman Safdar, founder of the Chamber of Barrister Salman Safdar (CBSS), Lahore. Dr. Amber Darr is a lecturer in competition law at the University of Manchester. Barrister Salman Safdar is an LSE alumnus (LLB 1998) and advocate of the DISCUSSANT: Justice Qazi Faez Isa sits on Pakistan’s Supreme Court.

Sheikh Raza Rahman (@razarahman), a 1999 LLM graduate of LSE, is the founding partner of Lexium — Attorneys at Law in Lahore.
CHAIR: Professor Alnoor Bhimani, Director of the LSE South Asia Centre and Professor of Management Accounting at the LSE, is an alumnus of the LSE (PhD 1992).

2.30 pm: CAN PAKISTAN BECOME SOUTH ASIA’S POWERHOUSE? 

Pakistan has one of the top ten largest workforces, the fifth largest population, and one of the top 25 largest economies in the world. It ranks among the top five producers of sugar cane, seed cotton, and mangoes among other things, and is a significant exporter of textiles, leather goods, chemicals, and surgical instruments. How can it strengthen its ability to deal with challenges related to access to water, sanitation, housing, and transportation? What recovery plans are available for the nation in the coming ten years, given the rising national debt, rising unemployment, and the rapidly expanding population? Can Pakistan become the dominant nation in South Asia?

SPEAKERS: Abdul Razak Dawood (@razak dawood) is an industrialist and the founder of Descon; Dr. Mariam Chughtai (@MariamChughtai) is the director of the National Curriculum Council of Pakistan; and Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib (@DrAmjadsaqib1) is a social entrepreneur and the founder and chairman of the Akhuwat Foundation.

4.45 pm: A CONVERSATION ON NATION-BUILDING

Director Professor Alnoor Bhimani in conversation with Syed Babar Ali OBE

A one-on-one discussion with Syed Babar Ali about moral leadership, corporate behaviour that puts the needs of the country first, the role of citizens, civil society, and the government in achieving societal balance, and how diversity encourages learning from others to create a more equal and prosperous citizenship.

There won’t be a live stream of this event, which is sponsored by Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS).
