At 1X Technologies’ Palo Alto headquarters, a quiet demonstration unfolds that hints at the future of home robotics. Dar Sleeper, the company’s Vice President of Growth, lifts Neo, a humanoid robot off the floor and gently places it onto a sofa. Weighing just 66 pounds, Neo is impressively light, a crucial design choice intended to ensure safety in everyday domestic environments. Its manageable weight minimizes risks if the robot accidentally falls near people, pets, or valuable household items.
1X Technologies is now moving beyond the testing phase and into the real world, announcing that Neo will soon be available for preorder. The company plans to begin shipping the robots to early adopters next year. The humanoid robot will retail for $20,000 or can be accessed through a $499 monthly subscription, with a six-month minimum term. Much like consumer electronics, Neo will be available in multiple colors including tan, gray, and dark brown—giving customers the freedom to choose a design that suits their living spaces.
The price tag may seem steep for a household gadget, yet it reflects the ambition behind the creation. Founder and CEO Bernd Børnich envisions Neo as far more than a novelty. His mission is to design a robot capable of performing all the necessary but time-consuming household tasks that people typically handle out of obligation rather than interest. These include everyday chores like unloading the dishwasher, folding laundry, or cleaning up—tasks that, when automated, could collectively free up significant time for users. Børnich believes this efficiency could create a profound shift in how people allocate their time, potentially transforming daily life in subtle yet impactful ways.
Looking further ahead, 1X Technologies has set bold production targets. Børnich envisions scaling Neo’s manufacturing to hundreds of thousands of units, a volume that could reshape how society views personal automation. “Potentially it’s the biggest thing ever, with respect to productivity increase across society,” he noted during a follow-up conversation. His comments reflect a vision not just for a product, but for a movement toward integrated robotics in the household space.
As Neo prepares to enter homes, 1X Technologies is positioning itself at the forefront of the home robotics sector. While the company faces the challenge of convincing consumers to invest in such an advanced device, its focus on safety, usability, and practical application could mark a turning point in domestic automation. With preorders opening and a clear roadmap for deployment, Neo represents a tangible step toward a future where humanoid robots are part of everyday living.
