When the department of Telegraph and Telephone was unable to provide the bare minimum essential communication facilities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan and Fata, in 1976, the Special Communication Organization was created through a special PM directive.
Spokesperson of SCO Col Ghulam Hussain Anjum talking about SCO’s history said, “Prior to that, the PM remained without communication services during his visit to GB. SCO took over the responsibility from T&T and since then has been providing all types of reliable and efficient communication services to the general public and the defense forces deployed all along the LOC.”
Currently, SCO is the only telecom that is providing more than 250 locations in AJ&K and GB the only mode of communication. Therefore, in order to further facilitate the populace of these areas to bring them at par with the rest of the country; SCO has announced that it is open to all CMOs and Telcos for such understandings and subsequently reaching an agreement on mutually agreed basis on merit for the provision of state-of-the-art telecom facilities to the deprived populace of AJ&K, GB and FATA.
Furthermore, SCO has already signed an agreement with PTCL, an MoU with CM Pak and is in talks with other telcos for the very purpose.
