Wateen Telecom Limited, one of Pakistan’s leading providers of ICT and connectivity solutions, has secured a 20-year renewal of its Long Distance International (LDI) License from Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The formal signing ceremony was held in Islamabad on November 6, 2025, and was attended by senior officials from PTA as well as Wateen’s leadership team. This development reflects Wateen’s sustained commitment to maintaining and expanding its role as a key player in Pakistan’s digital and telecommunications ecosystem.
Over the past year, Wateen worked closely with PTA to address the Access Promotion Contribution (APC) matter related to the Universal Service Fund (USF). The issue was resolved amicably and formalized through an order of Sindh High Court dated October 22, 2025, with endorsement from both PTA and the Ministry of IT and Telecom. This proactive resolution allowed Wateen to continue its operations without disruption and reaffirmed its position as a compliant and responsible telecommunications operator. The renewal of the LDI License ensures uninterrupted deployment of long-haul optical fiber networks and nationwide IP and voice services, which are critical for supporting Pakistan’s evolving connectivity needs.
Wateen’s LDI License serves as a foundational asset for the company, enabling the expansion of its fiber infrastructure and support for emerging technologies, including the country’s anticipated 5G rollout. With a growing national fiber footprint, Wateen plays a vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s digital backbone, providing reliable connectivity to carriers, enterprises, and government institutions. Adil Rashid, CEO of Wateen Telecom, stated that the license renewal demonstrates Wateen’s operational excellence and adherence to regulatory compliance. He emphasized the company’s ongoing focus on empowering customers in their digital transformation initiatives while contributing to sustainable technological progress across the country.
The milestone distinguishes Wateen in a telecommunications landscape where several LDI operators are still engaged in APC disputes and facing pending license renewals. By resolving regulatory matters efficiently, Wateen reinforces its credibility as a forward-looking, robust operator capable of supporting nationwide digital infrastructure. This renewal not only underscores Wateen’s leadership in building the national fiber backbone but also positions the company as a key enabler of 5G readiness and next-generation connectivity solutions in Pakistan.
