Ufone 4G has entered into a transformative partnership with ConnectHear, South Asia’s top assistive technology startup, to improve disaster response for Deaf communities in the country. This collaboration is particularly timely given Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate-related disasters and the urgent need to bridge the communication gap for Deaf individuals during emergencies.
Funded by the GSMA Innovation Fund for Humanitarian Challenges, this groundbreaking initiative aims to harness advanced AI technology to ensure that Deaf individuals can access life-saving information in the event of floods, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. Pakistan is home to over 10 million Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals, making this partnership a critical development for disaster preparedness and response.
In 2022, Pakistan was one of the ten most disaster-prone countries globally, with over 30 million people impacted by severe floods. During such calamities, communication networks often become compromised, leaving vulnerable groups, especially the Deaf community, at risk. Traditional early warning systems fail to provide them with essential updates, further exacerbating the danger. Recognizing this, the collaboration between Ufone 4G and ConnectHear focuses on creating an inclusive solution for disaster response.
The partnership aims to enhance ConnectHear’s virtual interpretation services, enabling them to function effectively even in low-connectivity environments. Additionally, they will develop an AI-powered system that automatically generates early warning messages in sign language, ensuring that Deaf individuals can receive real-time alerts during emergencies. This innovation will bridge the communication gap, allowing a traditionally underserved population to stay informed and take action in times of crisis.
Ufone’s extensive telecom network, which reaches over 26 million subscribers nationwide, will be pivotal in disseminating these AI-generated sign language alerts. By leveraging Ufone’s infrastructure, these critical early warning messages will be broadcast across Pakistan, ensuring nationwide coverage.
Further enhancing the accessibility of this service, Ufone 4G has committed to zero-rating the ConnectHear app on its network. This means that users will be able to access the life-saving information without needing a data package or mobile balance, eliminating financial and technical barriers that could otherwise hinder access during critical times.
Syed Atif Raza, Group Chief Commercial Officer of PTCL & Ufone 4G, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “At Ufone 4G, we believe that access to timely and accurate information during emergencies is not just a service but a lifeline. Our collaboration with ConnectHear represents a bold step towards ensuring inclusivity in disaster response. This partnership is a testament to our commitment to leveraging technology for meaningful impact, creating a safer and more connected Pakistan for everyone.”
Arhum Ishtiaq, Co-Founder and CTO of ConnectHear, also expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “This collaboration allows us to extend our reach and ensure that our AI-powered services remain accessible even during the most challenging circumstances. By optimizing our services for low-bandwidth environments and generating automated sign language alerts, we are ensuring that Deaf communities receive the life-saving information they need in real time.”
The GSMA Innovation Fund for Humanitarian Challenges has provided crucial funding for this initiative, recognizing the transformative potential of mobile technology in improving disaster response. Phillipe Bellordre, Head of Innovation Fund at GSMA, stated, “This partnership demonstrates the power of technology in bridging critical gaps, especially for vulnerable communities. We are proud to support a project that sets a precedent for inclusive disaster preparedness worldwide.”
The collaboration between Ufone 4G, ConnectHear, and GSMA represents a new standard in disaster response, one that combines AI, mobile technology, and cross-industry collaboration to ensure that no one is left behind during emergencies. The success of this project in Pakistan will serve as a model for other countries and humanitarian organizations aiming to enhance disaster preparedness for vulnerable populations.
Through this initiative, Ufone 4G and ConnectHear are not only providing a vital service for Deaf individuals but also creating a framework for inclusive, technology-driven disaster response that could benefit communities globally.
