With the delay of the Fable reboot to February 2027, The Blood of Dawnwalker is undoubtedly the most anticipated Western-made role-playing game due in 2026. The Blood of Dawnwalker will release on September 3, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. Developed on Unreal Engine 5, the game is described by developer Rebel Wolves as the first chapter of a brand new role-playing saga, a single-player open-world dark fantasy action role-playing game with a strong focus on story and narrative. Despite being a new intellectual property, the debut game from Polish developer Rebel Wolves benefits from a core development team that worked in key roles on CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and the similarities with that award-winning open-world role-playing game are many, while Rebel Wolves has also introduced features and twists that make it distinctly its own.
The game is set in the gothic fictional 14th-century kingdom of Vale Sangora, located in the Carpathian Mountains of Europe. Players take on the role of Coen, a man afflicted by a vampiric curse who exists as a Dawnwalker, human by day and vampire by night. Riddled with silver poisoning and a vampiric curse, Coen has 30 days to save his family, struggling with the choice of embracing his growing undead nature or fighting to retain his humanity. Bloody conflicts sweep the lands during this period, and the Black Death has come for the survivors. Vampires have seized the opportunity to walk out of the shadows and claim freedom and power, with other creatures of the night following their lead, turning legends into reality and reshaping history. Connected to Coen’s story is Brencis, an ancient and formidable vampire who has taken control of Vale Sangora and imposed a blood tax on humanity, serving as the central antagonist around which much of the game’s conflict is structured.
The gameplay shifts between two distinct styles depending on the time of day. During daylight hours, gameplay focuses on swordplay, featuring directional blocking in which players must select one of four directions to attack or parry. At night, Coen’s vampiric abilities come into play, opening up a different set of combat and traversal options. A third gameplay overview released in April 2026 gave a taste of the open world activities available, broken down into what players can do as a vampire by night and as a human by day, including Coen travelling as a wolf, a look at how an infamy system changes the world around the player, and the use of Hex magic against restless spirits. A new story trailer was also released as part of the Road to Launch event, introducing new characters that Coen will meet on his journey, with some serving as allies and others potentially becoming enemies depending on the player’s actions and choices throughout the game.
