According to Otto Waterlander, a senior partner at McKinsey & Company, the global oil and gas industry is playing catch-up and needs to innovate and shift to cost-effective operating models: supply chain reconfiguration, modular/standardization in development, production efficiency and field recovery, and digital.

Asim Ghaffar, Vice President Research and Development at LMKR speaks to IDG Pakistan on the Tech Leaders @ 2018 series. He describes his company’s biggest takeaway from 2017, and the key trends, challenges and opportunities that may impact his business and influence their strategy in 2018:
AG: 2017 was a challenging year for the Oil & Gas industry but with GVERSE we continued to innovate to make life easier for our customers – who now, in these highly uncertain market conditions, more than ever need our support to be best at what they are expected to do. The big take away for us is that downturn is an opportunity to build brand equity – especially by fostering connectedness with how technology is being leveraged in other verticals and in everyday life. If anyone wants to be the market leader, then they must be able to lead and innovate at all times.

2018 outlook is still uncertain however we are committed to innovate by simplifying the workflows, empowering the users with affordable high science solutions and by automating what should now be automated. I feel Deep Learning in particular will be a game changer in the immediate future considering there is also eagerness by E&P companies to adopt cloud. We are also closely watching blockchain and augmented reality to see how to make our portfolio more useful to our client base of both today and tomorrow.
LMKR is also the main partner for the consortium taking the lead on the National Incubation Center in Peshawar, which has its first batch coming in shortly. Asim Ghaffar also serves as one of the core team members for Code for Pakistan and is involved in giving back to the community through the help of innovation and technology.
