South Punjab government has taken a significant step towards improving traffic management by launching a pilot project for an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based radar system. The system, installed on Old Bahawalpur Road, is the first of its kind in the region.
Additional Chief Secretary South Punjab, Fuad Hashim Rabbani, inaugurated the project, emphasizing the importance of modern technology and artificial intelligence in driving progress across all sectors. He stressed that adopting such advancements is crucial to staying competitive and avoiding falling behind.
Rabbani highlighted that the practical application of artificial intelligence has already begun in various sectors within South Punjab. The successful implementation of this pilot project paves the way for expanding the AI-based radar system to other roads for traffic control. Public awareness campaigns on road safety will also be launched to complement the system.
The Bahawalpur Development Authority (MDA) has been tasked with adopting the AI radar system, which monitors the speed of vehicles on the road. Vehicles adhering to the speed limit will be displayed in green on the screen, while those exceeding the limit will appear in red. The system operates 24/7 with a backup power supply provided by solar panels.
In the second phase, the traffic system will be integrated with cameras, and the system will be handed over to the traffic police for effective management. The success of the pilot project will lead to the installation of the AI-based radar system on 21 roads under the MDA’s jurisdiction.
This innovative initiative demonstrates the South Punjab government’s commitment to utilizing technology to improve traffic management and enhance road safety in the region.
