Sony is continuing to place greater emphasis on PlayStation exclusive titles as the company prepares to showcase upcoming projects including Marvel’s Wolverine and future God of War related releases. Recent reports and industry discussions suggest Sony Interactive Entertainment is reassessing its strategy around PC releases for narrative driven single player games while increasing focus on strengthening the PlayStation ecosystem through console exclusives.
Sony recently confirmed that a new State of Play presentation will take place on June 2 with more than 60 minutes of updates and announcements related to upcoming PlayStation 5 games. According to PlayStation Blog, the event will open with a detailed look at Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games, including gameplay footage and additional information about the action adventure title scheduled for release later this year. Reports indicate the presentation could also include updates on several first party and third party projects currently in development for PlayStation platforms.
The discussion around Sony’s exclusivity strategy has intensified following reports that PlayStation Studios chief executive Hermen Hulst informed staff during an internal meeting that the company’s major single player narrative games would remain PlayStation console exclusives going forward. According to multiple reports, titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei and Saros may no longer receive PC versions after launch as Sony shifts focus towards supporting hardware sales and preserving the identity of the PlayStation platform. Multiplayer and live service titles are still expected to launch across multiple platforms.
Industry attention has also focused on the God of War franchise following announcements made during Sony’s February State of Play presentation earlier this year. Sony confirmed that a remake collection based on the original God of War trilogy is currently in development for PlayStation 5. The company also announced God of War Sons of Sparta, a new title connected to the long running franchise. Online discussions and reports have additionally referenced speculation regarding future projects connected to characters from the God of War universe, including rumours surrounding a title focused on Faye, although Sony has not officially confirmed such a project.
The renewed emphasis on exclusivity comes at a time when competition between gaming platforms continues to intensify across console, PC and cloud gaming markets. Sony had expanded PC releases in recent years with titles such as Spider Man, Horizon and The Last of Us reaching Steam and other platforms after their original PlayStation launches. However, recent reports suggest the company now sees exclusive single player games as an important part of maintaining PlayStation’s position in the gaming market. The strategy shift has generated mixed reactions online, with some players supporting the return to console focused releases while others have expressed disappointment over fewer PC launch opportunities for future PlayStation titles.
