Chaos Manufacturing, an independent studio founded by industry veterans with experience at major AAA developers, is developing SOL Shogunate, a sci-fi action role playing game described as a “samurai space opera.” The project imagines an alternate future in which humanity has colonized the Solar System while preserving a feudal Japanese social order. Set primarily on the Moon, the game places players in a world where artificial gravity cities pay homage to historic eras of Japan, complete with towering space elevators, high-speed trains, and elite districts that simulate Earthlike comforts. Beneath the surface, however, lies a harsher reality in which workers serve the ruling Shogunate under strict hierarchy and control.
Players assume the role of Yuzuki, the last surviving heir of a once powerful samurai family destroyed by a rival clan. Branded an outlaw ronin, she embarks on a journey that begins as a revenge tale but gradually expands into a broader narrative involving mystery, genetic modification, and the ethics of power in a technologically advanced society. According to the developers, Yuzuki is not a traditional samurai archetype. Equipped with a sword alongside thruster packs and grappling hooks, she fights in low gravity environments and navigates the lunar surface with mobility that blends classic melee combat and futuristic movement systems. Genetic enhancements are central to both gameplay and narrative, influencing her abilities and survival in the vacuum of space.
Progression in SOL Shogunate revolves around a genetic upgrade system rather than a conventional skill tree. Players collect “Gene Slices” from defeated enemies or hidden locations and arrange them on a customizable Gene Board. The placement of these genes unlocks active skills and passive abilities, while combining genes can create entirely new enhancements at the cost of the originals. This design encourages experimentation and ensures each playthrough offers variation in combat style and world interaction. Boss encounters are described as cinematic set pieces, often synchronized with original music composed in collaboration with Japanese rock artists. The studio aims to align combat phases with musical transitions, creating layered encounters that evolve in rhythm with the soundtrack.
Chaos Manufacturing operates as a small, largely remote team, emphasizing flexibility and shared ownership among its members. The founders have drawn on experience from large scale productions at major studios but are intentionally building a lean structure focused on autonomy and creative control. The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and is planned for release on PC and consoles. While still in early development, the team has indicated that the project will prioritize quality and polished gameplay over sheer length, aiming to deliver a focused action RPG experience that respects players’ time.
On the subject of artificial intelligence tools in development, the studio maintains that SOL Shogunate’s art direction is currently handcrafted, with artists drawing from real world inspiration, including research trips across Japan. While open to evolving technologies in the future, the team states that creative decisions are driven by artistic preference rather than cost cutting measures.
SOL Shogunate remains in early stages, but its blend of samurai tradition, futuristic science fiction, and music-driven combat positions it as an ambitious entry in the indie action RPG space, with more details expected as development progresses.
