SNK has announced a modern revival of its iconic Neo Geo home console, introducing the Neo Geo AES Plus, a hardware accurate remake that blends retro authenticity with modern connectivity. Developed in collaboration with Plaion, the new system is designed to closely replicate the original 1990s Neo Geo experience while incorporating updates that make it compatible with today’s display standards. The most notable addition is HDMI output with support for resolutions up to 1080p, allowing the console to connect directly to modern televisions without requiring legacy adapters.
Unlike many retro console remakes that rely on emulation or FPGA based replication, the Neo Geo AES Plus uses re-engineered application specific integrated circuit chips to recreate the original hardware behaviour. This approach allows the console to run games natively, delivering performance and responsiveness that closely match the original system. As a result, the device is capable of playing both classic and newly released cartridges without relying on software based emulation layers, preserving the original gameplay experience.
A key highlight of the system is its full backward compatibility with original Neo Geo cartridges, a feature that distinguishes it from most modern retro consoles. Players who still own physical game cartridges from the original era can use them directly on the new hardware, while new cartridges are also being introduced to support the platform. This continued focus on physical media reflects SNK’s effort to maintain the original ecosystem, where cartridge based gaming was central to the console’s identity.
In addition to HDMI support, the console also retains legacy AV output options, catering to enthusiasts who prefer the original display experience on CRT monitors. The system includes features such as DIP switches for adjusting performance settings, language options, and display configurations, giving users greater control over how games are presented. Accessories such as arcade style controllers and memory cards are also being reintroduced, further reinforcing the console’s authenticity and appeal to collectors and long time fans.
The Neo Geo AES Plus is scheduled for release in November 2026, with multiple editions planned, including standard and premium bundles that include controllers and a selection of games. The revival of the platform highlights a broader trend in the gaming industry, where companies are revisiting classic hardware with modern enhancements while preserving original functionality. By combining native hardware execution with updated connectivity, SNK’s latest release aims to bridge the gap between retro gaming nostalgia and contemporary usability.
