The Government of Sindh is continuing the phased expansion of its Pink Electric Vehicle Scooter Scheme, with the next distribution ceremony announced for Hyderabad on May 22. According to a statement issued by the Sindh Information Department, the distribution will take place under the provincial government’s women-focused transport initiative, which has been progressively extended to districts beyond its initial launch in Karachi. The scheme, implemented by the Sindh Mass Transit Authority, is part of a wider provincial push to address the mobility challenges faced by female students and working women across Sindh.
The Pink Electric Vehicle Scooter Scheme was established to provide women with safer, more affordable, and environmentally conscious transportation options. As part of the programme, beneficiaries also receive driving training, helmets, and road safety guidance, ensuring that the initiative goes beyond simply handing over a vehicle and actively prepares recipients for safe, independent travel. Eligibility criteria require applicants to be permanent residents of Sindh and either students or working women, while also holding a valid driving licence for a motorbike or car. Recipients are selected through a transparent balloting process to ensure fairness across applicants.
The Sindh government has already decided to procure 1,000 additional pink electric vehicles for women as part of a broader expansion of the province’s mass transit network, with Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stating that the government is taking practical steps to ensure safe and dignified travel for women. The expansion of the scheme beyond Karachi was directed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari during meetings at Bilawal House, where he expressed satisfaction with the initiative and instructed authorities to extend the programme in phases to women across the province. Hyderabad’s inclusion follows earlier distributions in Sukkur and Karachi, reflecting the administration’s intent to make the programme accessible at the provincial level rather than limiting it to urban centres.
