Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) has issued directives to its 16 subordinate departments and organizations, urging the swift adoption of the E-Office system to improve operational efficiency. This move aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision for a digitally transformed and transparent governance framework.

In an official communication, the Secretary of Science and Technology instructed key organizations, including the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR), Pakistan Science Foundation, Pakistan Engineering Council, NUST, NUTECH, and others, to accelerate their transition to digital systems. Renowned institutions like COMSATS University, PSQCA, and the Pakistan Halal Authority were also included in the directive.

The initiative follows a January 7 letter from the Prime Minister’s Office emphasizing the urgency of implementing E-Office systems across all federal ministries. Compliance reports are to be submitted by January 14, underscoring the strict timeline set by the government for achieving this milestone.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been a vocal advocate for digital transformation in government operations. He has consistently highlighted the importance of moving away from traditional paper-based communication to streamline processes, reduce delays, and promote transparency. The Prime Minister has expressed dissatisfaction with the slow progress in some federal ministries, reiterating that adopting digital tools is critical to ensuring efficient governance.

While the directive has set ambitious goals, challenges remain. Sources indicate that the Ministry of Science and Technology itself faces delays in implementing the E-Office system. Several departments reportedly lack the infrastructure necessary for a seamless digital transition, casting doubt on their ability to meet the January 14 deadline.

Despite these obstacles, the Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to the Prime Minister’s vision, with efforts underway to address technical and logistical issues. The successful implementation of E-Office across MoST and its affiliated organizations could set a precedent for digital transformation in other government sectors.

As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on the Ministry and its departments to deliver on the promise of streamlined, transparent, and efficient governance through cutting-edge technology.
