For years the names of apps and websites that allow users to remain anonymous have been known for sharing confessions, feelings, problems and more without any consequences. Ask.fm, YikYak, and Whisper are all examples of websites that allowed users to post various content anonymously and thus without accountability. These websites were only famous for a while, for reasons that will be mentioned below, there is now a new member joining their ranks. However, Sarahah.com is more globally famous than the rest of aforementioned apps. This app has been famous in the Middle East and Africa for a while, but just recently gained fame in the western world and the land down under.

Sarahah means “honesty” or “frankness” in Arabic and this app was developed by a Saudi Arabian developer, Zain al-Abidin Tawfiq. The platform allows users to receive messages anonymously and the website claims that this will help people discover their strengths and weaknesses with honest opinions from colleagues and from friends. The users are given a particular username which they can share and tell others about it to receive “constructive anonymous feedback” for “self-development” as the app says.
It has a brief registration process after which the user is free to avail all the features they offer, including linking the user’s Snapchat account and Instagram to it and getting your friends to write anonymous messages to the user. Snapchat generally does not allow users to connect their account with any other website or app, but up till now no action has been taken against millions of users of Sarahah who have done just that. Sarahah team is considering the option to reply to these messages right now, but there are chances of that feature being added. However, despite the claims made by the app there is literally nothing stopping the portal from being used for bullying as with anonymity all accountability is lost. Already there have been claims from various users that they have been bullied using this app. It is quickly becoming the breeding ground of heinous activities such as bullying which has numerous disadvantages. Added to that the users have to really remember the spelling of the word as many have complained they cannot access it.
However, the chances of this portal not being used for bullying are very low since the one thing bullies love is having a way to achieve their goal without having to face any repercussions.
