Punjab government has announced a major overhaul of its education system, with plans to convert all 85 government commerce colleges into IT institutions. This decision is driven by declining enrollment in commerce courses and the escalating costs associated with maintaining these colleges.

To address the growing demand for IT professionals and optimize resource allocation, the province aims to restructure these institutions into modern IT campuses equipped with cutting-edge facilities. The transformation will include the establishment of co-working spaces to foster entrepreneurship and e-libraries to enhance research capabilities.

The Punjab Higher Education Department is set to initiate the conversion process within the next ten days, with the goal of rapidly transforming these colleges into centers of IT excellence. The initiative is expected to significantly boost Punjab’s standing in the global IT industry.

Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat expressed optimism about the project, emphasizing its potential to create a skilled IT workforce and drive economic growth in the province.
