The Punjab Prisons Department has taken a significant step forward by initiating a pilot project that provides internet service to inmates, following the directives from the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab. This groundbreaking development aims to offer a wide range of benefits to prisoners, transforming their incarceration experience.

To kick-start the project, ten computers have been installed in each of the two jails located in the provincial capital. These computers will grant inmates access to 22 specific websites carefully selected for educational and informative purposes. The strategic placement of computers includes the children’s barracks of Camp Jail and the carpet factory within Kot Lakhpat Jail. The success of this pilot project will determine its potential expansion to other prisons across the province.

The introduction of internet access to inmates brings forth numerous advantages. It provides them with an opportunity to engage in educational activities, such as online learning courses and skill development programs, ultimately enhancing their knowledge and improving their prospects of successful reintegration into society upon their release. Additionally, internet access allows inmates to maintain communication with their family members, promoting emotional well-being and nurturing vital social connections.

This pilot project signifies a significant milestone in the modernization of prison facilities and highlights the Punjab Prisons Department’s commitment to fostering positive rehabilitation outcomes for incarcerated individuals. By embracing technology and providing internet access, the department aims to create a conducive environment for prisoners to develop essential skills, expand their horizons, and ultimately transform their lives.
