In a major step towards transforming urban transportation in Punjab, Dr. Ahmad Javid Qazi, the Punjab Transport Secretary, has announced the launch of 86 eco-friendly electric buses that will operate on six key routes in the first phase of the initiative. The fleet will consist of 50 nine-meter buses and 36 eleven-meter buses, marking a significant milestone in the province’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and modernize public transport. The funding for this ambitious project has already been approved by the Punjab Cabinet, with a clear vision to improve the quality of public transportation and promote environmental sustainability.

Dr. Qazi made this announcement during a visit to Faisalabad, where he assessed the city’s urban transport needs, planned for the metro bus service, and supervised the launch of intra-city electric buses. Faisalabad is set to be a central hub for these modern transportation systems, which will pave the way for cleaner, more efficient travel across the region.

The meeting, held at the FDA Complex Committee Room, brought together key officials, stakeholders, and representatives from various sectors to discuss the future of urban mobility in Punjab. Muhammad Mobasher, a consultant with the Asian Development Bank, presented plans for the metro bus service, which will serve as a key part of the province’s efforts to modernize its public transport infrastructure. In addition, Hassan Faiq Manhas, the Chief Transport Officer of Punjab Transport Company (PTC), provided updates on the intra-city electric bus project, highlighting its importance for urban mobility and sustainability.

A key aspect of this initiative is the establishment of three dedicated bus depots to support the operations of the electric buses. These depots will be located at strategic sites: Ghulam Muhammadabad, Sargodha Road, and Gatwala. These locations have been carefully selected to ensure maximum efficiency and accessibility for the electric bus operations. The development of these depots will also create new job opportunities and support local economies while advancing the region’s green transport agenda.

During his visit, Dr. Qazi emphasized the need for integrated planning to ensure the success of this transportation transformation. He directed the district administration, Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA), traffic police, and municipal corporations to prioritize developing the appropriate routes and enhancing road infrastructure to accommodate the electric buses. Proper coordination and execution of this plan will be crucial in ensuring that the new electric buses run smoothly and effectively serve the needs of the public.

Furthermore, Dr. Qazi underscored the importance of aligning the metro bus service with the electric bus project, calling for thorough consultation with all relevant departments, including the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA). Synchronizing the metro bus and electric bus projects will ensure a seamless public transport network, allowing commuters to switch between the two systems easily.

The introduction of these electric buses is not just a step forward in terms of environmental sustainability; it is also a response to the growing demand for efficient, reliable, and affordable public transport in Punjab’s urban centers. By embracing electric buses, the province is addressing long-standing challenges in urban mobility while aligning with global trends towards greener, smarter cities.

The Punjab government’s push for electric buses also reflects a broader regional trend of transitioning towards eco-friendly transport solutions. As cities worldwide face challenges related to pollution and congestion, electric buses offer a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuel-powered vehicles. This initiative in Punjab could serve as a model for other regions, demonstrating the viability of electric buses as an essential component of modern urban infrastructure.

The rollout of electric buses in Faisalabad and other cities is just the beginning of what could be a province-wide transformation in public transport. With the support of the Punjab Cabinet, the Transport Secretary, and various stakeholders, this ambitious project has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for millions of commuters while contributing to the province’s environmental goals.

As this initiative progresses, it will be interesting to see how it impacts the urban landscape, not just in terms of transportation but also in driving a culture of sustainability and innovation in Punjab. The success of these electric buses could mark a pivotal moment in the province’s ongoing efforts to build a greener, smarter future for its citizens.
