The Punjab government has announced a province-wide plan to digitize all toll plazas in an effort to improve transparency, efficiency, and convenience for travelers. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where she approved the complete replacement of the manual paper receipt system with a digital platform that integrates payment, monitoring, and data management across the province.
Under the newly approved plan, a “One App, One System” model will be launched across 38 toll plazas in Punjab, following the digital framework used on national motorways. The system will introduce automated toll collection through electronic payment and digital receipts, allowing smoother vehicle movement and minimizing congestion. This initiative forms part of the provincial government’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at modernizing infrastructure and enhancing citizen convenience through technology. Officials stated that the unified system will not only simplify toll operations but also ensure accountability by reducing manual handling of cash transactions and providing real-time data access to relevant departments.
During the meeting, officials from multiple departments presented updates on ongoing and upcoming projects related to transport, construction, and energy efficiency. The chief minister also approved five major road projects to be executed under public-private partnerships, highlighting that collaboration with private firms would improve project efficiency, cut costs, and ensure timely completion. She further emphasized the importance of energy conservation and directed authorities to install solar-powered streetlights on all newly constructed roads. This move aims to reduce electricity consumption and promote eco-friendly urban development across Punjab.
The meeting also reviewed progress on several urban beautification and infrastructure projects, particularly in Lahore. Plans were approved to enhance the city’s visual appeal through initiatives such as installing a decorative fountain and a miniature train for children in the park opposite the railway station. Additionally, construction of new roads and footpaths within a three-kilometer radius of the station was approved to improve accessibility and pedestrian safety. Officials informed the meeting that 54 major bridges, 142 small bridges, and 858 roads damaged by recent floods have been fully restored, while road rehabilitation projects in Murree, Chakwal, and Sahiwal have been completed successfully.
Highlighting the benefits of digital governance, it was revealed that Punjab has already saved Rs 40 billion through e-tendering practices, reflecting improved transparency and efficiency in project procurement. The introduction of digital toll plazas builds upon this success, reinforcing the provincial government’s vision to digitize critical public systems. This initiative not only streamlines daily travel for citizens but also strengthens Punjab’s progress toward a smarter, more transparent, and sustainable public infrastructure network.
