Punjab government has officially outlined the eligibility criteria for its highly anticipated laptop distribution scheme, which is set to empower students across the province with the necessary digital tools to support their academic journeys. The announcement was made following a key review meeting chaired by Rana Sikandar Hayat, the Provincial Minister for Education. This meeting, attended by Ajmal Chandio, the Parliamentary Secretary for Higher Education, and Dr. Farrukh Naveed, the Secretary of the Higher Education Department (HED), was crucial in finalizing the details regarding the rules, procedures, and eligibility requirements for the initiative.

The government’s decision to launch this scheme follows a broader push to provide students with the necessary resources to succeed in today’s increasingly digital learning environment. The scheme, aimed at providing laptops to students, will initially target those in the first and second semesters of their undergraduate and medical programs. It marks a significant step in addressing the digital divide that many students face, particularly in rural and underserved areas of Punjab.

The eligibility criteria for the scheme are clearly defined. For BS students, those who have secured at least 65 percent marks in their intermediate exams will be eligible to receive a laptop. In contrast, medical students, who typically have a more rigorous academic path, will need to have achieved a minimum of 80 percent in their intermediate exams to qualify for the distribution. This distinction aims to prioritize those with high academic performance in fields that require extensive study and research.

The provincial minister also emphasized the importance of streamlining the application process, instructing officials to accelerate the completion of the online portal for applications. The portal is expected to be launched soon, with the review process for applications to follow closely behind. Students will be able to apply through the portal, which will then facilitate the creation of a merit list to determine who will receive the laptops. The review meeting also stressed the need for efficiency in finalizing the dates for the portal launch, the application review process, and the announcement of the merit list.

In addition to the laptop distribution scheme, the meeting also addressed preparations for the second phase of the Honhaar Scholarship Programme, which is part of the Punjab government’s ongoing commitment to supporting higher education students. The minister directed that the necessary steps for the scholarship program’s second phase be completed immediately, ensuring that more students can benefit from this financial assistance.

This initiative is part of the Punjab government’s broader strategy to enhance access to digital resources for students and to support the growth of digital learning in the province. By providing laptops, the government aims to ensure that students have the tools necessary to excel in their studies, particularly as education continues to integrate technology. The distribution scheme is expected to significantly impact the academic performance of students by facilitating access to online learning resources, research tools, and digital platforms that are integral to modern education.
