Punjab’s education sector saw a series of strategic initiatives in 2025, with the provincial government extending its laptop distribution scheme to students of private educational institutions, providing 10,000 devices under the program. Announcing the expansion, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat highlighted that 2025, much like the previous year, remained a year of focused action aimed at improving education outcomes across the province. The initiative is intended to enhance digital literacy among students, enabling them to access modern learning tools and resources, bridging the gap between public and private school students in the digital era.
In his address, Minister Hayat detailed the performance of the Education Department in 2025, noting that systemic improvements were undertaken to eliminate two million ghost enrolments and address teacher shortages through the rationalisation of 26,000 teaching positions. These efforts were designed to ensure that schools operate efficiently and that teaching resources are optimally allocated. Alongside administrative reforms, syllabus updates and examination reforms were introduced, with education boards transitioning to e-marking systems to streamline assessment processes and improve transparency.
Punjab’s government also placed significant emphasis on early childhood education, establishing Early Childhood Education rooms in 10,000 schools, providing foundational learning spaces for young learners. Complementing these efforts, the provincial nutrition programme continues to benefit 1.1 million male and female students daily, highlighting a holistic approach to education that combines learning with wellbeing. School infrastructure was upgraded with 268 institutions receiving enhancements, while administrative oversight was strengthened through the resolution of 37 cases of teacher harassment, reflecting a broader commitment to safe and equitable educational environments.
The province also advanced merit-based appointments across higher education institutions, completing the process of appointing principals in 450 colleges and vice-chancellors in 29 universities. These measures aim to strengthen leadership, governance, and accountability within the education system. Minister Hayat stressed that the combined focus on technology adoption, human resource optimisation, curriculum updates, and administrative reforms reflects Punjab’s ongoing strategy to modernise education. By integrating digital tools like laptops and e-marking, the government aims to improve learning outcomes, enhance teacher effectiveness, and prepare students for an increasingly technology-driven world. These efforts underscore the province’s commitment to fostering accessible, inclusive, and digitally empowered education across both public and private sectors.
