Punjab is set to deploy 1,100 electric taxis under a new interest-free installment scheme designed to promote zero-emission mobility and support job creation. The initiative is part of the Punjab E-Taxi Scheme under the larger E-Taxi Program 2025 spearheaded by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. It aims to gradually replace traditional fuel-based taxis with environment-friendly electric vehicles. The government hopes this program will contribute to a cleaner urban environment and improve employment opportunities for unemployed youth.
Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan presided over a high-level meeting to finalize key elements of the project. Discussions included vehicle selection, pricing models, and the phased rollout of the supporting infrastructure. The project has secured a supply partnership with Dewan Motors, who will provide locally assembled electric vehicles, including the Honri VC20 and VC30. The Honri VC20 offers a driving range of 200 kilometers per charge, while the VC30 provides up to 300 kilometers, ensuring sufficient coverage for urban and peri-urban commutes.
To ensure smooth operation of these electric taxis, the provincial government is investing in a widespread EV charging network. In Lahore, charging points will be installed every 3 kilometers, facilitating reliable access to power for drivers. Further network expansion is planned to cover key urban centers and highway corridors across Punjab. This infrastructure investment is central to the project’s success, aiming to make EV usage both convenient and reliable for commercial taxi drivers.
The scheme has been designed to be as accessible and inclusive as possible. The application process will be simplified to encourage broad participation, with specific provisions to support women, disabled individuals, and residents of rural communities. By removing interest payments and making ownership of an EV feasible for low-income individuals, the initiative is expected to empower thousands of new drivers and contribute to more sustainable livelihoods.
Bilal Akbar Khan emphasized the government’s commitment to green transport and job creation, noting that the official public launch of the scheme will take place in the coming weeks. Details will be released through a wide-reaching awareness campaign to ensure that eligible applicants across the province are informed about how to apply and benefit from the program. The Punjab E-Taxi Scheme combines local industry development, employment generation, and clean technology in a coordinated effort to transform urban mobility while aligning with broader climate goals.
