PTA has issued a firm warning to internet users and digital content creators over the growing spread of fake news, sexually explicit material, and unethical content across social media and other digital platforms. The authority emphasized that while freedom of expression is a constitutionally protected right, this freedom does not extend to actions that violate national laws, religious sentiments, or public morality.

According to PTA, misuse of digital platforms to promote unlawful or blasphemous content, or to incite hatred against individuals or institutions, is a serious offense under Pakistani law. The authority highlighted that content disrespecting holy personalities or involving blasphemy will be dealt with strictly, as such offenses are punishable and fall under the criminal provisions of the law. Any attempt to spread false narratives or controversial material that disrespects religion or state institutions, including the armed forces and national security entities, constitutes a legal violation and will not be tolerated.

PTA noted a noticeable rise in harmful digital activity, including the deliberate dissemination of fake news and sexually explicit content. The regulatory body pointed out that many individuals are exploiting social media to spread such material, often under the guise of activism or freedom of speech. It warned that promoting unethical or misleading content undermines public order and violates societal norms. These acts are not only morally unacceptable but also clearly defined as punishable under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.

The regulatory authority reaffirmed its commitment to upholding PECA 2016 and maintaining digital discipline across Pakistan’s online ecosystem. PTA reiterated that individuals engaged in the promotion or circulation of unlawful content will face legal action as per the law. It called for greater public awareness regarding the consequences of spreading misinformation and emphasized that any digital behavior harming collective societal values will be addressed through appropriate enforcement channels.

To further support efforts in safeguarding digital integrity, PTA has encouraged citizens to take an active role in identifying and reporting such content. Users are advised to use the PTA CMS mobile application to report any form of illegal or harmful online material. The authority urged digital citizens to remain responsible in their online interactions and exercise caution before sharing any content that could be misleading, inflammatory, or in violation of ethical or legal standards.

PTA reminded all internet users that digital freedom comes with a duty to respect others, uphold the law, and contribute to a healthy online environment. In today’s connected landscape, the misuse of platforms can have far-reaching consequences. PTA remains focused on promoting responsible digital behavior and ensuring that digital spaces in Pakistan are safe, respectful, and aligned with national values.
