Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to utilize all communication channels to provide the public with real-time updates regarding the growing flood risk across the country. This order follows intense rainfall that has heightened the likelihood of flooding in various regions, particularly around the Indus River and its tributaries. The instruction aims to improve situational awareness and timely dissemination of alerts to populations in vulnerable areas.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of immediate action, particularly in districts downstream of Tarbela Dam. With the possibility of spillway operations increasing river flow, the risk of flash floods in those regions has significantly risen. In response, he has instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to work in close coordination with Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), ensuring a united and swift response to any emerging threats.

To support this effort, NEOC has been tasked with mapping and sharing high-, medium-, and low-risk flood zones through media outlets. This will enable communities in potential danger zones to access reliable information and take precautionary steps. Provincial governments have been told to back this process with strong awareness campaigns that inform residents about flood risks, evacuation routes, and safety protocols.

PTA’s involvement includes the use of SMS alerts, mobile notifications, and digital communication tools to issue timely warnings. These messages will inform citizens of the flood status in their area and guide them on safety actions as the situation develops. The integration of real-time alert systems is intended to minimize the impact of sudden water surges and improve public response during emergencies.

Shehbaz Sharif has also urged provincial authorities to confirm their readiness to deal with potential flooding. NDMA has been directed to oversee these preparations and ensure that each provincial government has completed the required arrangements for emergency management. This includes the availability of rescue equipment, evacuation plans, trained personnel, and essential supplies.

The Prime Minister’s instructions highlight the need for unified planning and operational efficiency. NDMA has been told to establish stronger coordination mechanisms with provincial administrations and relevant departments, enabling quick mobilization in case of a disaster. The overarching goal is to avoid delays and miscommunication during high-risk weather events, particularly when response time can directly affect public safety.

This initiative underlines the importance of combining digital tools, inter-agency coordination, and public awareness to manage climate-related emergencies. With PTA deploying a national-level alert system and NEOC guiding media communications, the federal and provincial apparatus is being aligned for a more responsive approach to managing seasonal flood risks.
