Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has strongly dismissed a fake notification circulating on social media that claims a reduction in mobile phone taxes along with alleged instructions for mobile phone importers and consumers. The regulator clarified that the information being widely shared online is false and misleading, warning that such misinformation can create unnecessary confusion among consumers and businesses at a time when mobile taxation and device registration policies remain a key concern for the public.
According to PTA, no notification, directive or policy change has been issued regarding any reduction in mobile phone related taxes or revisions to existing procedures for importers or users. The clarification was issued after screenshots of a fabricated notification began circulating across multiple social media platforms, prompting speculation about changes in duties and levies applicable to mobile phones. In an official post shared on X, a PTA spokesperson categorically rejected the claims, stating that the authority has not announced any such measures and that the document being circulated does not originate from PTA or any government department.
The spokesperson emphasised that PTA regularly communicates policy updates, regulatory decisions and public advisories through its official website and verified social media channels only. Citizens, mobile phone importers and retailers were urged to avoid sharing unverified content and to exercise caution when encountering announcements that are not supported by official confirmation. PTA noted that misleading information related to taxes and import regulations often spreads rapidly, particularly when smartphone prices and duties are already a sensitive issue for consumers, making it essential for the public to verify claims before acting on them.
Officials highlighted that mobile phone taxation involves multiple government bodies and follows a defined legal and regulatory process, which is always communicated through formal notifications and official platforms. Any change in duties, taxes or import related procedures is announced transparently and remains accessible to the public through authorised channels. PTA stressed that reliance on unofficial sources can lead to financial loss, incorrect compliance decisions and misunderstandings regarding regulatory obligations, particularly for individuals importing devices or registering phones under existing frameworks.
The authority further advised consumers to report misleading posts and fake notifications encountered online, helping limit the spread of misinformation related to telecom services and device regulations. PTA reaffirmed its commitment to keeping the public informed through timely and accurate updates, adding that verified announcements are consistently published on its website and social media accounts to ensure clarity and trust. By reiterating this stance, PTA aims to reinforce the importance of digital literacy and responsible information sharing, especially in areas that directly impact consumers, traders and the broader telecom ecosystem in Pakistan.
