Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued formal warnings to telecom operators over persistent slow internet and mobile network performance in certain regions, citing ongoing service challenges amid growing demand. The regulator highlighted that network slowdowns are frequently caused by peak-hour congestion, limited fiberization, backhaul constraints, power outages, and geographical limitations. PTA emphasized that telcos must adhere to Quality of Service (QoS) standards and ensure consistent connectivity across the country, aligning with license obligations and regulatory frameworks.
To monitor and enforce compliance, PTA employs system parameter analysis, field surveys, and complaint-driven investigations. These measures aim to verify that mobile operators maintain service quality, particularly as Pakistan’s mobile subscriber base exceeded 210 million users in 2025, placing significant pressure on existing network infrastructure. PTA noted that while immediate issues often stem from network saturation and operational challenges, sustained improvements will require long-term planning and investment in capacity expansion.
Looking ahead, PTA highlighted that the upcoming spectrum auction is expected to alleviate congestion and enhance broadband performance by releasing additional bandwidth for operators. The regulator also identified 5G deployment as a critical opportunity to boost mobile and internet services nationwide, offering higher speeds and lower latency for urban and rural populations alike. Complementary initiatives under the Digital Pakistan vision, including fiber expansion and infrastructure sharing among telcos, are being promoted to strengthen network coverage, improve reliability, and ensure equitable access to high-speed connectivity.
While PTA’s warnings and regulatory oversight address immediate service concerns, the authority stressed that the overall quality of mobile and internet networks will ultimately depend on operators’ investments in infrastructure, efficient utilization of newly allocated spectrum, and adherence to established QoS requirements. These efforts are intended to support a more robust telecommunications ecosystem in Pakistan, capable of meeting the growing demands of subscribers while aligning with the government’s broader digital and technological initiatives.
