Pakistan Telecommunication Authority PTA has introduced a new SIM retention facility aimed at helping overseas Pakistanis maintain their mobile numbers during extended stays abroad. This initiative provides relief to millions of expatriates who rely on uninterrupted connectivity with family, banking institutions, and official services in Pakistan. According to an official statement released on Saturday, overseas Pakistanis can now contact their respective mobile network operators to activate the SIM retention service, ensuring continuity of mobile services and avoiding automatic blocking due to inactivity.

PTA emphasized that the facility is designed to support expatriates by maintaining access to essential communication services, including banking alerts, official verifications, and regular contact with family members in Pakistan. The regulator noted that millions of Pakistanis residing abroad for employment or education had been facing recurring issues of SIM blocking, which often disrupted access to important digital services linked to CNICs, banking platforms, and government applications. By allowing SIM retention, PTA ensures that citizens can remain digitally connected without interruptions, even when away from the country for extended periods.

The announcement aligns with PTA’s recent directives requiring all SIM cards to be registered in the name of the actual user. Last month, the regulator reiterated that using SIMs registered under another person’s name constitutes a violation of telecom regulations and may lead to legal consequences. PTA clarified that the registered subscriber remains fully responsible for any misuse of the SIM, highlighting the importance of lawful and responsible usage while benefiting from the retention service. This step underscores PTA’s broader commitment to securing the telecommunication ecosystem while accommodating the growing overseas population.

Officials noted that the SIM retention facility reflects PTA’s dedication to strengthening Pakistan’s digital connectivity globally. With the expansion of digital services and mobile-based verification systems, uninterrupted access to Pakistani SIM cards has become critical for overseas citizens. The initiative allows users to continue receiving banking alerts, conducting financial transactions, and completing official verifications without needing to frequently update or replace mobile numbers. It also ensures that personal and professional communications remain consistent, contributing to greater convenience and digital security for expatriates.

PTA’s new service represents an effort to balance regulatory compliance with practical solutions for citizens living abroad. By integrating SIM retention with existing mobile frameworks, the authority aims to provide seamless connectivity while ensuring that all telecommunication services remain secure and properly registered. Users seeking to benefit from this facility are advised to contact their network providers promptly to activate the service and confirm continued operation of their Pakistani numbers while residing overseas.

The initiative is part of PTA’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience, strengthen digital infrastructure, and facilitate uninterrupted access to mobile and financial services for both residents and non-residents. With millions of overseas Pakistanis relying on these networks, SIM retention ensures continuity, convenience, and compliance with national telecom regulations.
