PTA is seeking a balance between national security and a thriving IT sector through a consultation process on its VPN registration framework.
Representatives from the Ministry of IT & Telecommunication (MoIT&T), Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), and Pakistan IT Association (P@SHA) participated in the session, highlighting the importance of VPNs for secure connections within the IT and e-commerce sectors.
To address concerns about potential misuse of VPNs for illegal activities, the PTA introduced a streamlined online registration process at ipregistration.pta.gov.pk. This simplified framework aims to provide uninterrupted access for legitimate users while encouraging companies and freelancers to register their VPNs.
The consultation process underscores the PTA’s commitment to a “safe, accessible, and compliant digital landscape.” This approach seeks to empower the IT sector while ensuring national security.
The move comes amidst recent discussions surrounding VPN usage in Pakistan. While digital rights activists have expressed concerns about potential censorship, PTA maintains the registration process is crucial for a secure and vibrant digital space.
