Pakistan has joined a list of countries deemed “not free” in terms of internet freedom, according to Freedom House’s 2024 report. The country’s score of 27 out of 100 indicates a significant decline in internet freedom over the past year.

The report highlights Pakistan’s government’s actions of blocking websites, restricting access to social media platforms, and surveilling internet users. Individuals have been arrested and imprisoned for their online activities related to political, social, or religious expression. Additionally, there have been instances of physical attacks and killings in retaliation for online activities.

Globally, the report reveals a concerning trend of declining internet freedom. In 27 out of 72 countries surveyed, protections for human rights online have diminished. Over 5 billion people now have access to the internet, yet 79 percent live in countries where individuals face risks for expressing themselves online.

While Pakistan faces challenges in internet freedom, it’s important to acknowledge the government’s efforts to promote digital inclusion and improve internet connectivity. However, further progress is needed to ensure a free and open internet for citizens.
