Pakistan has completed another step toward the introduction of fifth generation mobile services as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority finalized the assignment stage of the Next Generation Mobile Services 5G spectrum auction. The process confirmed the positioning of spectrum bands acquired by telecom operators during the earlier bidding phase, allowing companies to determine the exact frequency placements required for network planning and deployment. The completion of this stage marks a significant administrative milestone in the country’s efforts to prepare for the gradual rollout of 5G services.
During the assignment stage, telecom operators secured their specific positions within the available spectrum bands that had been purchased in the main auction phase. The process determines the precise placement of spectrum blocks, which plays an important role in enabling efficient network planning, minimizing interference, and ensuring optimal use of radio frequencies. According to details released by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, the spectrum allocation across different frequency bands reflects the outcomes of the earlier bidding process, where operators competed to secure capacity required for future high speed mobile services. In the 2600 megahertz band, Jazz secured 70 megahertz of spectrum, while Zong and Ufone each obtained 60 megahertz. In the 3500 megahertz band, Ufone acquired the largest share with 120 megahertz, while Jazz and Zong secured 50 megahertz each. A total of 60 megahertz of spectrum in the same band remained unsold following the auction. The spectrum bands involved in the auction are widely used globally for fifth generation mobile technology as they allow operators to deliver faster data speeds, improved network capacity, and lower latency for mobile users.
The auction generated approximately 509.6 million United States dollars for the national exchequer, equivalent to around 142.6 billion Pakistani rupees. Among the participating telecom operators, Jazz emerged as the largest buyer with spectrum worth about 239.38 million dollars. Ufone followed with an investment of approximately 156.75 million dollars, while Zong secured spectrum valued at about 113.47 million dollars. The proceeds from the auction contribute directly to government revenue while also enabling telecom companies to expand network capabilities for future data demand.
With the assignment stage now complete, telecom operators can proceed with detailed network design, infrastructure deployment, and equipment planning necessary for the rollout of fifth generation services. The next steps will involve integrating the newly assigned spectrum into existing mobile networks and expanding infrastructure such as base stations, fiber connectivity, and supporting systems required for advanced mobile technologies.
Industry observers note that the completion of the spectrum assignment stage provides clarity for telecom companies as they move toward operational readiness for 5G services. The deployment of next generation networks is expected to support faster connectivity, improved digital services, and increased capacity for emerging technologies including smart infrastructure, digital services platforms, and connected devices across Pakistan’s expanding telecommunications ecosystem.
