Pakistan has advanced to the final round of the second phase of its 5G spectrum auction, with bidding currently underway to determine positioning in the 3500 MHz band. The auction, formally launched by Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, IT Secretary, and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman, represents a significant step in the country’s digital transformation. PTA emphasized that transparency has been ensured in the process under the guidance of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reflecting the government’s commitment to an open and fair allocation of critical spectrum resources.

PTA Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman explained that the current bidding is focused solely on spectrum positioning. He noted that the bidding for the 2600 MHz band has already been completed, and the results for both the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands will be announced together once the auction concludes. This approach allows operators to secure preferred positions within the spectrum, ensuring optimal deployment of 5G services across Pakistan.

Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja described the auction as historic, highlighting that such a large allocation of spectrum had not been seen before in the country. She noted that Pakistan had previously operated on only 274 MHz of spectrum, positioning it among the countries with the lowest spectrum availability. With the conclusion of the auction, the country has moved from the lower tier to a middle-tier spectrum capacity, formally entering the era of 5G and paving the way for improved connectivity nationwide. The minister emphasized that this milestone will benefit the entire country, particularly the youth, and will have positive implications across sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, trade, and economic development.

The minister further underscored the importance of technology for security, referencing the country’s achievements in cyber defense during the previous year’s “Battle of Truth.” Acknowledging ongoing challenges related to internet connectivity, she indicated that the spectrum auction will directly contribute to addressing these issues and expanding reliable network coverage across the nation. As the auction moves through its final round, the results are expected to provide clarity for telecom operators, enabling them to finalize their 5G deployment strategies and strengthen Pakistan’s position in global digital connectivity.
