Ministry of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives (MoPDSI) marked a significant milestone today by hosting a pivotal meeting of the National AI Taskforce. Led by Federal Minister Prof. Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary, the meeting centered on the unveiling of an AI Implementation Roadmap. This comprehensive strategy, developed collaboratively by the National Center of Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) and the AI Taskforce, is poised to reshape Pakistan’s socio-economic landscape.

In his opening remarks, Minister Ahsan Iqbal highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in accelerating economic growth, fostering innovation, and creating new employment opportunities. He emphasized how AI could drive efficiency across critical sectors, including judiciary, healthcare, manufacturing, education, energy, climate change, and defense, heralding a new era of technological advancement and national development.

A central focus of the discussion was the integration of AI into Pakistan’s development strategy, as outlined in the roadmap created by NCAI. The roadmap provides a detailed blueprint for harnessing AI to address sectoral challenges and propel national progress. It also aligns closely with the objectives of the “Uraan Pakistan” initiative launched by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which seeks to leverage AI to promote sustainable development, boost exports, and implement the 5Es Framework: enhancing exports, accelerating digital transformation, ensuring efficient energy solutions, adopting sustainable practices, and fostering social justice.

The roadmap places significant emphasis on human capital development, with plans to introduce AI literacy programs at all levels of education—from schools to universities. Vocational training and scholarship opportunities will further equip Pakistan’s workforce to lead the AI revolution. Additionally, AI Technology Parks are set to be established, providing a platform for startups to innovate and commercialize AI-driven solutions.

To ensure a cohesive approach, a centralized National AI Office, under NCAI’s leadership, will oversee governance, policymaking, and regulation of AI projects. Regional AI Liaison Offices will also be created to facilitate localized implementation. Over the next three months, MoPDSI will organize 12 sector-specific workshops involving government officials, industry leaders, and academics to address challenges and develop actionable strategies for AI integration. These workshops aim to foster collaboration across all sectors and ensure alignment with national goals.

Minister Ahsan Iqbal called for an immediate and unified effort to harness AI’s potential. He directed stakeholders to focus on delivering the action plan within three months, ensuring that necessary infrastructure and technical support are in place. Collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology and provincial governments will be vital to facilitating AI integration across all sectors.

The Minister also underscored the importance of ensuring that AI applications adhere to social, ethical, and environmental considerations. He stressed the need for AI-driven innovations to promote not just economic growth but also equity and sustainability.

The ambitious roadmap is a testament to Pakistan’s commitment to becoming a leader in AI innovation. By aligning efforts across government, academia, and the private sector, the initiative aims to position Pakistan as a competitive force in the global AI ecosystem while addressing local challenges with cutting-edge solutions. The focus on education, innovation, and inclusivity ensures a future where technology serves as a catalyst for comprehensive national progress.
