Ministry of IT and Telecom has announced a comprehensive plan for the introduction of 5G technology in Pakistan, setting June 2025 as the target for the rollout. According to official documents presented in Parliament, this initiative will allow telecom operators to begin launching 5G services across the country starting in July 2025. The plan is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize digital infrastructure and enhance connectivity, aiming to position Pakistan as a competitive player in the global technology landscape.

The timeline for the rollout has been carefully structured to ensure the process is efficient and transparent. In February 2025, a consultant working with the Spectrum Advisory Committee will finalize recommendations addressing critical issues such as spectrum pricing, trading conditions, and taxation policies. These recommendations will form the basis for reforms that are expected to foster greater participation from telecom operators. By March, the Spectrum Advisory Committee will conclude the necessary policy adjustments to streamline the allocation and utilization of the 5G spectrum.

The federal government’s approval of a policy directive is expected in April 2025, providing the formal framework required for telecom operators to acquire spectrum and prepare for 5G deployment. The auction of spectrum bands, including 3500 MHz, 2600 MHz, 2300 MHz, and 700 MHz, is scheduled for May 2025. This auction is anticipated to attract strong interest from both local and international telecom companies, reflecting the high stakes involved in this technological shift. Following these preparatory steps, the actual rollout of 5G services will commence in June, with commercial launches likely beginning in major urban centers by July 2025.

The rollout of 5G technology in Pakistan is expected to have a transformative impact on the country’s digital economy. With its ability to deliver high-speed internet and low latency, 5G technology will pave the way for advancements in areas such as the Internet of Things, smart cities, and automation. Enhanced connectivity will benefit industries like healthcare, education, agriculture, and manufacturing, improving productivity and fostering innovation. Moreover, the deployment of 5G infrastructure is expected to create thousands of jobs and attract significant foreign investment, particularly from international telecom companies looking to tap into the Pakistani market.

Despite its promise, the rollout of 5G also presents significant challenges. High spectrum prices have long been a concern for telecom operators in Pakistan, raising questions about their ability to participate in the upcoming auction. Additionally, substantial upgrades to existing telecom infrastructure will be required to support 5G networks, a task that will demand considerable financial and technical resources. Reforms in taxation policies will also be critical to ensure telecom operators can sustain the investments needed for 5G deployment. Furthermore, ensuring that the benefits of 5G reach rural and underserved areas will require targeted efforts to bridge the digital divide.

Pakistan’s timeline for 5G rollout comes at a time when countries around the world are rapidly adopting next-generation technology. Nations like South Korea, the United States, and China have already achieved extensive 5G coverage, while regional players such as India and Bangladesh are also progressing with their rollout plans. By adhering to its schedule, Pakistan has the opportunity to position itself as a leader in digital innovation in South Asia, enabling faster internet access and unlocking new avenues for economic growth.

The Ministry of IT and Telecom’s roadmap for the introduction of 5G marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s digital transformation journey. If successfully implemented, this initiative could not only modernize the country’s telecom infrastructure but also set the stage for long-term economic and technological advancements. However, addressing the challenges of affordability, infrastructure development, and equitable access will be crucial to ensuring the success of 5G in Pakistan. As the countdown to June 2025 begins, all eyes will be on the government and the telecom sector to deliver on this ambitious promise.
