Pakistan’s mobile phone industry is setting its sights high, aiming to become a major export hub and generate a staggering $15 billion in exports within the next four years.
This ambitious target was discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Mr. Muzzaffar Hayat Piracha, CEO of Airlink Communication Limited. Piracha presented a plan to the Prime Minister, highlighting the industry’s potential and requesting a supportive environment to unlock export opportunities.
“This industry, with proper focus, can yield significant results,” Piracha stated, aiming for $10-15 billion in exports.
Prime Minister Sharif expressed strong support for the mobile phone sector, recognizing its contribution to job creation, economic development, and export diversification. He assured the industry of the government’s full backing in achieving this ambitious goal.
Pakistan’s mobile phone industry has seen rapid growth in recent years, attracting investments from both local and international companies. The country boasts 26 authorized mobile device manufacturers, including renowned brands like Samsung, Nokia, Xiaomi, and Oppo.
Government initiatives like the 2021 Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy have fueled this growth, attracting over $200 million in local investments. The potential is substantial – meeting the annual domestic demand of 36 million units could generate $14 billion for the national treasury.
This growth trend was further evidenced by the 2023 Engineering Development Board summit, where 31 local manufacturers participated, including global giants like Samsung and Xiaomi.
With a shared vision between the government and private sector, Pakistan’s ambition to become a mobile phone export hub appears increasingly achievable. Through strategic planning and continued support, Pakistan aims to capture a significant share of the global market, generating billions in export revenue and establishing itself as a major player in the international mobile phone industry.
