Pakistan’s efforts to expand digital inclusion and women’s participation in the technology sector moved forward as the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication convened the inaugural Steering Committee meeting of the Digitalization for Women Economic Empowerment project. The initiative, implemented in collaboration with UN Women Pakistan, KOICA Pakistan Office, and key public and development sector stakeholders, aims to strengthen women’s role in the country’s digital economy through structured policy and technology-driven interventions.

The meeting was chaired by Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, with participation from senior representatives including the Country Representative of UN Women Pakistan and leadership from KOICA. The session brought together stakeholders from government, development organisations, and technology partners to align on strategic priorities and define a governance framework for the project. The initiative focuses on building inclusive digital ecosystems that enable greater access, participation, and opportunities for women across Pakistan.

Discussions during the session centred on identifying practical pathways to improve women’s engagement in digital platforms, including access to digital tools, skills development, and integration into technology-enabled economic activities. The framework aims to support institutional coordination and align national digital transformation goals with inclusive growth strategies. By leveraging technology as a key enabler, the project seeks to reduce barriers to entry for women in sectors such as freelancing, e-commerce, and digital services.

The D4WEE initiative reflects a broader shift in Pakistan’s digital policy landscape, where inclusion and accessibility are becoming central to technology-driven growth. As the country continues to expand its digital infrastructure and services, initiatives like this highlight the importance of ensuring equitable participation in the evolving digital economy. Stakeholders emphasised continued collaboration to translate policy frameworks into actionable outcomes that support sustainable development and long-term economic empowerment through technology.
