Pakistan Post is set for a significant digital transformation following approval of the Automation of Post Office project by Central Development Working Party. The initiative, valued at Rs. 6.644 billion and funded through Export-Import Bank of Korea, will modernize operations in 2,761 post offices across the country. Alongside digitizing core services, the project aims to improve financial offerings and streamline end-to-end postal processes, enabling Pakistan Post to better compete in a rapidly evolving communications and financial environment.
Officials note that Pakistan Post has faced declining revenue in recent years, with estimates showing a 65 percent loss to competitors who had adopted digital solutions earlier. The automation project is designed to address this gap by introducing updated technology and strengthening service delivery. Modernization efforts will focus on creating efficient workflows, enabling faster processing of mail and financial transactions, and improving overall customer experience. The project will also help Pakistan Post enhance its role in the national financial network by offering more secure and accessible digital services to users across urban and rural areas.
The approval for this project comes as part of a broader CDWP meeting where a total of seven development projects worth Rs. 34.66 billion were cleared, with an additional two major projects valued at Rs. 44.62 billion forwarded to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council for final approval. These development initiatives span several sectors, including education, governance, health, higher education, information technology, housing, power, transport, and water resources. Among the approved projects is the establishment of a Danish School in Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, estimated at Rs. 3.319 billion, aimed at improving access to quality education in the region.
By digitizing post offices and enhancing financial services, Pakistan Post is positioning itself to regain relevance in both communications and banking sectors. The project emphasizes integration of technology with daily operations, supporting efficient management of postal networks while ensuring secure handling of transactions. The initiative also reflects wider government efforts to modernize public sector services under the Digital Pakistan framework. With automation, post offices will be able to offer faster, more reliable services, reduce manual processing errors, and expand access to digital financial tools for citizens, supporting inclusion and convenience across the country.
This project marks a pivotal step in Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen its public infrastructure through technology, combining international financing with local implementation to achieve scalable results. By focusing on automation, digitalization, and improved operational efficiency, Pakistan Post is expected to enhance both its financial performance and service quality, bridging the gap with private competitors while extending reliable access to modern postal and financial services across the country.
