Pakistan is set to establish new artificial intelligence, research and development, and skills training centres as part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s plan to enhance the country’s industrial and technological capabilities, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan announced on Friday. During a meeting with the leadership of Technology Upgradation and Skill Development Company (TUSDEC) and Pakistan Industrial Technical Assistance Centre (PITAC), Khan outlined a roadmap that includes the creation of specialised facilities such as a Mining and Mineral Processing Technology Centre, a Women Digital Skills Development Centre, and an Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twin Centre. These initiatives aim to modernise Pakistan’s industrial infrastructure while equipping the workforce with advanced skills to compete globally.

Khan highlighted the importance of learning from international best practices to replicate advanced technologies in Pakistan. He cited examples from developed nations, stressing that PITAC should observe the operations of established artificial intelligence institutes abroad and incorporate those practices locally. The special assistant emphasised that artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly worldwide and urged Pakistan to keep pace with global developments in order to remain competitive. He also referenced Uzbekistan’s Techno Park, noting innovations such as solar water heaters and prepaid billing systems as models that Pakistan could adapt to its local context, demonstrating the potential for practical technology transfer.

The meeting also covered plans for modernising key sectors, including seafood processing and packaging plants, contemporary abattoirs, and meat processing facilities across Pakistan. Khan stressed that industrial institutions must adopt modern skills and technologies to improve efficiency and competitiveness. He announced that a research and development centre would be established in Gujranwala to serve as a hub for industrial innovation, fostering the growth of new technologies and providing a platform for experimentation and development. Khan praised PITAC’s initiatives in introducing modern skills and English language training for students, emphasising their importance in preparing the workforce for international markets.

Khan concluded by committing to personally meet and recognise PITAC students who excel in their training programs, highlighting the critical role that skilled individuals play in driving Pakistan’s industrial and technological development. The establishment of these AI, R&D, and skills training centres represents a coordinated effort to align the country’s industrial growth with emerging technological trends, ensuring that Pakistan can participate effectively in the global innovation ecosystem. These initiatives are expected to enhance productivity, create socio-economic opportunities, and strengthen Pakistan’s position in technology-driven industries.
