Pakistan has taken a significant step toward modernizing its visa system with the launch of the “Pak ID” mobile application, designed to facilitate visa-on-arrival services for citizens from 120 eligible countries. This initiative, spearheaded by NADRA, is expected to streamline the visa application process, making travel to Pakistan easier and more efficient for international visitors. The “Pak ID” app introduces a fully digital application process, allowing travelers to apply for business and tourist visas directly from their mobile devices. The app features advanced functionalities, including face recognition, document scanning, and photo upload capabilities, eliminating the need for physical visits to consulates or embassies. Applicants can also track the status of their visa applications in real time and receive notifications, ensuring greater transparency and convenience.

One of the most notable aspects of this digital transformation is the speed at which visas will be processed. Traditionally, obtaining a Pakistani visa could take several days, sometimes even weeks, depending on the applicant’s nationality and circumstances. However, with the introduction of “Pak ID,” eligible travelers can expect visa approvals within just 24 hours, significantly reducing waiting times and making Pakistan a more attractive destination for tourists and business professionals alike. This move is part of a broader government strategy to enhance Pakistan’s tourism and business engagement. The country’s visa policy is already among the most open in the region, with citizens from 192 countries eligible to apply online for various visa categories. By further digitizing the process, Pakistan aims to boost its tourism sector, attract foreign investment, and position itself as a travel-friendly destination. The app is now available for download on both Android and iOS platforms, ensuring accessibility for users worldwide.

In addition to streamlining visa applications, the “Pak ID” app also simplifies identity services for overseas Pakistanis. Users can apply for national identity cards through the app, reflecting NADRA’s continued efforts to modernize administrative services using digital technology. The introduction of this app aligns with Pakistan’s ongoing digital transformation initiatives, which aim to make government services more efficient and user-friendly. While the current version of the app primarily supports Visa Prior to Arrival (VPA) applications, other visa categories still require applicants to use the Pakistan Online Visa System (POVS) website. However, the government has signaled its intent to expand the app’s functionality in the future to include additional visa types and services.

In another development aimed at improving public services, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi recently inaugurated a new 24/7 passport office at NADRA’s Mega Centre in Karachi’s North Nazimabad area. The newly launched facility is designed to operate round the clock, ensuring uninterrupted passport and identity-related services for the public. During his visit to the Mega Centre, Minister Naqvi engaged with citizens applying for passports and identity cards, inspecting the service counters and interacting with staff. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing public concerns and enhancing service delivery. “The main goal is to resolve the issues faced by the public,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has also facilitated the arrival of Indian journalists for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, which the country will be hosting. According to sources, seven Indian journalists applied for visas to cover the cricket tournament, and all have been granted approval without any rejections. This decision highlights Pakistan’s commitment to promoting sports diplomacy and ensuring fair access to international media. With these recent developments, Pakistan is making significant progress in enhancing its digital infrastructure, improving public service delivery, and fostering global engagement. The introduction of the “Pak ID” app marks a major milestone in the country’s efforts to modernize its visa process, attract international visitors, and strengthen its position in the global tourism and business landscape.
