The Pakistan Digital Authority took part in the Consultative Meeting on the Finalization of the One Health Joint Action Plan for the ICT Model District, held at the COMSTECH Secretariat in Islamabad. The session brought together stakeholders to discuss how a more connected digital health ecosystem could strengthen the country’s ability to respond to health emergencies, particularly situations where an outbreak spreads faster than the information needed to track and manage it.
Representing PDA at the meeting, Dr. Reham Baig shared the Authority’s vision and options for an integrated health system, highlighting the importance of interoperability, secure data exchange, digital identity, common technical standards, and coordinated digital health systems across different institutions. This framing positioned digital infrastructure not merely as a technical upgrade but as a foundational requirement for enabling different health related sectors to share information effectively and respond to emerging threats in a coordinated manner.
The discussion underscored the need to move beyond fragmented and standalone digital solutions toward a more connected, interoperable, and citizen centred digital health ecosystem. Participants specifically discussed how such a system could support coordinated action across human health, animal health, environmental health, laboratories, surveillance systems, and other relevant sectors, reflecting the broader One Health approach that recognizes the interconnected nature of health risks spanning humans, animals, and the environment. This cross sectoral framing suggests that effective health emergency response increasingly depends on data sharing between agencies and disciplines that have traditionally operated with separate, disconnected systems.
The session also highlighted how strong digital foundations could support the broader One Health approach, strengthen pandemic preparedness, and enable more timely and informed decision making across the various institutions involved in health surveillance and response. Participants closed the discussion by noting that any plan for coordinated health action ultimately depends on how connected the underlying systems supporting it actually are, framing the work of building that connected digital layer as an ongoing priority for the institutions represented at the consultation, including PDA, COMSTECH, and the broader network of health and scientific bodies involved in the ICT Model District initiative.
