Fashion Goes High Tech – Pakistani Designer Produces 3D Printed Dresses

While half of the world debates whether it is Laurel or Yanny, our design specialist startups are all set to make history as they explore 3D printed dresses for the first time in Pakistan.

The 3D Printing Industry is rapidly growing and worldwide it is expected to grow from $3.07B in revenue in 2013 to $12.8B by 2018, and exceed $21B in worldwide revenue by 2020. As it evolves, 3D printing technology is destined to transform almost every major industry and change the way we live, work, and play in the future.

In Pakistan even, one can see many startups and organization that are investing in 3D printing and working towards implement the technology for 3D printing in to the lives of the citizens.

One of the people that are making 3D printing in Pakistan a reality is Hira Naeem, who has designed and 3D printed a dress. The technology has been provided for 3D printing by Viscous.co, an on-demand manufacturing service that provides 3D Printing, 3D Designing, 3D Scanning, Reverse Engineering, Prototyping, and training and workshops. They can be found at ICCBS Technology Park and Technology Incubation Center, University of Karachi.

The first 3D printed and designed dress was made possible withthe help of three dimensional printing, artists and fashion designers. The dress can be customized and tailored to the client’s needs.

To name a few advantages regarding the 3D printed clothes, one can easily integrate gadgets that can monitor heart beat, blood pressure humidity level, GPS system etc. Furthermore, the startup was funded by the Angel Investor Asha Jadeja Motwani, who appreciated the 3D printed fashion garments created by Hira Naeem that were printed in Lahore at the 3D printer they have parked at ITU.

Hira Naeem has introduced the concept of 3D printing to fashion in order to develop a “sustainable fashion” model that leaves no waste during the production of clothes. She had introduced this at her final year thesis in PIFD, and calls it “a new philosophy in sustainable fashion”.
