Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has highlighted its March 2026 spectrum auction as the largest release of mobile spectrum in Pakistan’s telecom history, framing the sale as central to easing network congestion and improving quality of service for citizens. In a recap shared under its Digital Nation Pakistan branding, the ministry pointed to the sale of 486 megahertz of spectrum as the auction’s headline achievement, describing it as a milestone aimed at addressing the bandwidth constraints that had limited network performance for years.
The auction itself was conducted in March 2026, when the federal government raised approximately $507 million by selling 480 megahertz of spectrum against a target of 597.2 megahertz on offer, with three telecom operators, Jazz, Zong, and Ufone, securing frequencies across the 700 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 3500 MHz bands. Jazz emerged as the largest single buyer, acquiring 190 megahertz across multiple bands, while Ufone secured 180 megahertz and Zong obtained 110 megahertz, nearly tripling the total spectrum available to mobile operators in Pakistan from 274 megahertz to more than 750 megahertz.
The ministry’s recap comes months after the auction concluded, positioning it as part of a broader effort to keep the achievement visible in public messaging even as operators continue working through the practical rollout of 5G services across the country. Earlier coverage following the auction noted that device compatibility remained a limiting factor for consumers, with companies including Apple and Samsung yet to release region specific software updates needed to activate 5G functionality on certain devices already capable of supporting the newly allocated frequency bands.
