The Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) has announced a substantial increase in the annual renewal and installation fees for Base Transceiver System (BTS) towers across the capital city, aiming to bolster revenue streams. This decision has garnered attention from telecom companies and residents alike.
Effective immediately, the annual renewal fee for BTS towers will surge from 50,000 to Rs. 1.2 million, while the fee for new installations will rise to 1 million rupees. This adjustment marks the first change in BTS tower fees since 2004, with MCI emphasizing its necessity after nearly two decades.
MCI officials stated that the decision followed extensive consultations with telecom companies and relevant stakeholders. MCI clarified its non-interference in sharing arrangements between telecom companies, leaving such decisions to mutual agreement.
In addressing concerns about the fee hike, MCI emphasized the need to align fees with current market standards and infrastructure maintenance costs. Revenue generated from these adjustments is expected to significantly enhance the city’s infrastructure and services.
The draft detailing the implementation of the new fee structure for BTS towers is reportedly in its final stages, awaiting formal approval. MCI assures stakeholders of transparency and fairness throughout the process, offering opportunities for feedback and dialogue.
