Pakistan has taken another step toward expanding its electric vehicle infrastructure by making it mandatory for all new petrol pumps in Islamabad to install electric vehicle charging facilities. The decision was discussed during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, where officials reviewed the country’s Electric Vehicle Policy and ongoing initiatives aimed at accelerating the transition to cleaner transportation. The move is intended to improve charging accessibility for electric vehicle users while supporting the government’s broader environmental and sustainable mobility objectives.
During the meeting, the Ministry of Industries and Production briefed committee members on progress under the national Electric Vehicle Policy. Officials shared that more than 100 electric vehicle charging stations have already been licensed across Pakistan as part of efforts to expand the country’s charging network. Alongside infrastructure development, the government is promoting local manufacturing of electric vehicles and components, encouraging investment in the sector and reducing dependence on imported technologies. Authorities also discussed plans to introduce a comprehensive battery policy and recycling framework to support the long term growth of the electric mobility ecosystem.
The committee also reviewed several initiatives designed to encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles across the country. These include incentive programs for electric two wheelers and three wheelers, facilitation schemes for government employees and skills development initiatives to prepare the workforce for emerging opportunities within the electric vehicle industry. Officials emphasized that expanding charging infrastructure remains one of the key priorities for increasing consumer confidence and supporting the transition toward cleaner transportation options.
The requirement for electric vehicle charging facilities at new petrol stations reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to modernize its transport infrastructure while addressing environmental challenges and reducing carbon emissions. As electric vehicle adoption gradually increases, the expansion of charging networks is expected to play a significant role in improving convenience for drivers and supporting investment in sustainable transport technologies.
