Islamabad International Airport has officially been declared a fully digital payment enabled facility, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward a cashless economy. The announcement was made during a formal ceremony where JazzCash was recognized for playing a leading role in driving the airport’s transition to a completely cashless operational environment. The initiative was undertaken in collaboration with Pakistan Airports Authority and State Bank of Pakistan, aligning with the Prime Minister’s broader vision of promoting digital payments and reducing reliance on cash across public and commercial infrastructure.

As part of the transformation, interoperable QR based digital payment acceptance has been embedded across the airport’s ecosystem, covering passenger service counters, parking facilities, retail outlets, and other touchpoints frequently used by travelers and visitors. This deployment allows passengers to make payments seamlessly using their mobile wallets and digital banking apps, eliminating the need for cash transactions. To support this infrastructure, smart payment devices were installed across the airport, including Soundbox solutions that provide real time audio confirmations of successful transactions. These measures are designed to reduce queue times, streamline payment processing, minimize physical cash handling, and enhance transparency in daily airport operations, benefiting both service providers and passengers.

Officials from Pakistan Airports Authority stated that the shift to digital payments significantly improves passenger convenience while bringing airport services in line with international digital standards observed at leading global aviation hubs. They noted that a unified digital payment framework simplifies operational workflows, reduces reconciliation challenges, and enhances overall service efficiency. Representatives from State Bank of Pakistan emphasized that expanding digital payment acceptance across critical public infrastructure is essential for building trust in electronic payment systems and accelerating nationwide adoption. According to the central bank, airports represent high visibility environments where secure and reliable digital payment experiences can help normalize cashless transactions for millions of users each year.

The conversion of Islamabad International Airport into a fully cashless facility reflects growing institutional momentum toward a digitally enabled economy in Pakistan. By integrating secure, interoperable, and scalable payment rails into one of the country’s most important national gateways, the initiative demonstrates how public sector entities and private fintech players can collaborate to modernize service delivery. The model established at the airport is expected to serve as a reference point for similar digital payment transformations at other major airports, transport hubs, and commercial centers across the country. With digital payments now embedded into core passenger services, the initiative reinforces confidence in Pakistan’s fintech ecosystem while supporting broader economic digitization goals through practical, everyday use cases.
