The federal government has directed the suspension of 3G and 4G mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, following the announcement of a protest march by a religious group. The Ministry of Interior issued instructions to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to implement the decision, citing the need for security management and coordination during public gatherings. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi approved the directive, which is set to take effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice, contingent on the security situation in both twin cities. The move represents a precautionary measure aimed at controlling digital communication channels and preventing misuse during large-scale public demonstrations.

PTA has been tasked with coordinating closely with Chief Commissioners and Inspectors General of Islamabad and Rawalpindi to ensure a smooth suspension of mobile internet services. In addition, the authority is instructed to maintain constant communication with law enforcement agencies to monitor security developments, manage traffic, and oversee compliance with government directives. Officials emphasized that the temporary shutdown is intended to mitigate potential disruptions, safeguard public safety, and facilitate effective management of crowd movement during the planned march. The measure also aligns with previous government interventions to manage large-scale gatherings where digital communication could amplify unrest or misinformation.

Security measures in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been tightened in anticipation of the march. Containers have been positioned at key locations, and major highways are expected to be partially closed to regulate vehicular and pedestrian movement. Traffic authorities are planning diversions to minimize congestion and ensure that emergency services remain accessible despite the closures. Law enforcement agencies are coordinating with local administrations to deploy personnel strategically across critical areas, aiming to maintain order and prevent any incident that could escalate during the demonstration. Authorities highlight that public cooperation and adherence to advisories will be critical for the effectiveness of these measures.

The decision to suspend mobile internet services reflects a broader approach in Pakistan toward managing public events that involve large crowds and potential security risks. While the move temporarily limits access to digital connectivity, it is intended to ensure overall public safety, maintain law and order, and allow authorities to monitor and control the situation more effectively. The indefinite nature of the suspension underscores the government’s intent to retain flexibility, enabling restoration of services once the security environment stabilizes. Residents and mobile users in Islamabad and Rawalpindi are advised to plan accordingly and rely on alternative communication channels until 3G and 4G services are fully reinstated.
