Apple is reportedly working on a second generation iPhone Air, expected to launch in spring 2027 alongside the standard iPhone 18 and the budget focused iPhone 18e, according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who has a consistent track record of accurately reporting on Apple’s upcoming product plans. The timing would keep the Air line on a separate release schedule from Apple’s higher end iPhone 18 Pro and a rumoured foldable iPhone, both expected in the autumn, splitting Apple’s annual lineup across two separate launch windows going forward.

According to Gurman, the iPhone Air 2 will focus primarily on addressing the two most common criticisms of the original iPhone Air, battery life and camera versatility. Chinese supply chain leaker Digital Chat Station has said the device is expected to carry a 3,500 mAh battery, up from roughly 3,149 mAh in the current model, representing an increase of around 11 percent. The same leaker also corroborated reports that Apple will add a second rear camera to the device for the first time in the Air lineup, addressing one of the most frequent complaints from reviewers and buyers about the current single lens model.

The added camera is expected to be a 48 megapixel ultrawide lens sitting alongside the existing 48 megapixel main sensor, a configuration that would bring the Air closer in line with Apple’s standard iPhone models. Fitting a second camera into the Air’s slim chassis is expected to require a redesigned Face ID module to free up internal space, since the device’s camera plateau currently houses the phone’s entire logic board. Apple leaker Jon Prosser, who has published detailed renders and specifications for the device despite a mixed track record and a past lawsuit from Apple over previous leaks, has said the iPhone Air 2 will retain a titanium body and introduce a new lavender colour option, while reportedly using either a standard A20 chip or the more powerful A20 Pro, accounts of which have varied across different leakers.

The A20 Pro, if used, would be built on an advanced 2nm manufacturing process, offering meaningful gains in performance and power efficiency over the A19 Pro chip used in the current model. Some reports also point to Apple adopting a Wafer Level Multi-Chip Module packaging approach that separates the RAM from the main processor die, a change said to improve heat dissipation and allow for better battery efficiency within the phone’s ultra thin frame. Additional rumours suggest Apple may adopt Samsung made Color Filter on Encapsulation OLED display technology, which could make the device’s screen thinner without affecting its 6.5 inch size or 120Hz refresh rate.

On pricing, none of the leakers have confirmed exact figures, though Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has publicly acknowledged that price increases across the company’s product lineup are becoming unavoidable given rising component costs, a trend some reports suggest could push the iPhone Air 2’s starting price up by around 50 dollars compared to its predecessor. With roughly eight months remaining before its expected unveiling, Apple has not commented on any of the rumoured specifications, and further details are likely to emerge incrementally as the device moves closer to its spring 2027 launch alongside the rest of Apple’s next generation iPhone lineup.
