Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan has officially launched the National Skill Competency Test aimed at IT graduates, marking a significant step towards aligning academic outcomes with the demands of the rapidly evolving global technology sector. This initiative, developed under directives from the Prime Minister, is designed to standardize assessment criteria for computing students in their final academic semesters. HEC collaborated closely with the Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunication (MoITT), Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), and Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) to create a framework that strengthens the preparedness of Pakistan’s IT workforce for domestic and international markets.
The test specifically targets students enrolled in the seventh or eighth semester of computing programs, including Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science. Participation is free, offering students a valuable opportunity to validate their skills through a recognized certification jointly issued by HEC, PSEB, and P@SHA. High-performing candidates will be included in a national talent pool accessible to employers both locally and abroad, enhancing their prospects for internships, apprenticeships, and advanced certification pathways. Moreover, qualifying students will receive one academic credit from their institutions, further incentivizing participation.
The significance of this competency test extends beyond individual students to impact universities nationwide. HEC mandates Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to ensure full participation of eligible students and has tied the results directly to university benchmarking and rankings. Universities will be categorized into performance tiers based on their students’ success rates, reflecting how well academic programs align with industry standards and skill requirements. Institutions that fail to comply by facilitating registration or nominating a focal person before the February 6, 2026 deadline will face penalties, including automatic placement in the lowest performance category in national rankings. This adds an important layer of accountability and drives universities to prioritize student readiness in the IT sector.
Eligible students must register promptly through their university focal persons to meet the February 6 deadline. The computer-based test is scheduled to take place simultaneously across Pakistan on April 4 and 5, 2026. By implementing this standardized assessment, HEC and its partners aim to bridge the gap between academic training and industry expectations, enabling Pakistani IT graduates to compete effectively in a global marketplace. The initiative underscores the government’s focus on digital skills development as a critical component of the country’s broader economic and technological advancement efforts.
