Governor Sindh visited the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, where he met Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja to discuss the growth of Pakistan’s information technology and telecommunications sectors. The two sides also reviewed ways to accelerate digital transformation and strengthen cooperation between the federal and provincial governments, a theme that has come up repeatedly in recent months as Islamabad has worked to coordinate its digital agenda with individual provinces rather than pursuing federal level initiatives in isolation.
The Governor praised the federal minister for introducing reforms and policies aimed at modernizing the country’s IT sector, saying these initiatives had helped speed up Pakistan’s digital transformation. He said the government’s IT initiatives were creating new job opportunities and helping young people acquire the digital skills needed to compete in the global market, framing the sector’s growth primarily through the lens of youth employment and skills development rather than purely as an economic or export story. He also appreciated the government’s broader efforts to empower youth through technology and skills development programmes, a theme that has featured prominently across several of the ministry’s initiatives over the past year.
For her part, the federal minister said the government’s top priority was to equip young people across Pakistan with digital skills and modern technologies to support inclusive national development. She said the government was upgrading the country’s telecommunications infrastructure to strengthen the digital economy and promote sustainable economic growth, tying the meeting’s discussion of skills and youth empowerment back to the underlying infrastructure investments needed to support that growth over the longer term.
The Governor and the federal minister reaffirmed their commitment to improving cooperation between the federation and the provinces, and agreed to work together on programmes to equip the youth of Sindh with digital skills while expanding collaboration on IT related projects. The meeting adds to a pattern of federal-provincial engagement on digital policy that has picked up pace in recent months, with Pakistan Digital Authority and the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication holding similar coordination meetings with officials from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other provinces as the government works to align its national digital transformation agenda with implementation capacity at the provincial level.
