According to government documents accessible to local media, Pakistan is set to introduce ultra-fast gigabit fiber internet in eleven cities. The Public Sector Development Project (PDSP) budget for 2022-2024 outlines various ongoing and future projects, including the expansion of Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) Fiber to the Home (FTTH) services.
The project aims to provide high-speed gigabit internet connectivity to more cities, offering faster and more reliable internet access to residents. While the approval status of the project is still “under process,” the government has allocated a budget of Rs. 800 million for the initiative, with an additional Rs. 50 million set aside for the project in 2023-2024. It is important to note that no foreign aid is involved in this particular project.
In addition to the fiber internet expansion, the government is working on several other development projects in the IT sector. These include the establishment of four knowledge parks, a technology park development project, an online recruitment system for the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC), the implementation of smart offices for Federal Ministries and Departments, and the expansion of broadband services in Kashmir and Gilgit, among others.
While the specific timeline for the implementation of these projects is not mentioned, the government’s focus on improving digital infrastructure and connectivity demonstrates its commitment to enhancing technological development and accessibility across the country.
