Government College University Lahore has completed a full transition to paperless administrative operations, adopting a cloud based digital system developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board to manage all official processes across the university. The system was provided to the university free of cost on special instructions from the Punjab government, giving all departments access to a single online platform for handling leave applications, travel permissions, annual performance reports, official orders and administrative correspondence.
According to a university spokesperson, digital note sheets for inter-departmental proposals, approval of visiting faculty remuneration, purchase requests and departmental meeting agendas will also be processed exclusively through the new system going forward. The platform is designed to eliminate the physical movement of files between offices, an approach intended to reduce processing delays and improve overall tracking of administrative matters across departments.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Umar Chaudhry said digital governance has become essential for running a modern higher education institution, describing the shift from paper based processes to digital platforms as a structural change intended to improve transparency, efficiency and accountability rather than simply an environmental measure. He added that removing administrative delays and manual file tracking would allow faculty members and administrative heads to focus more of their time on teaching and research rather than paperwork.
The university said the digitisation of its administrative system forms part of a wider digital transformation campaign launched under the vice chancellor’s leadership during the previous academic year, which has already included online approval of student society events and digital billing for payments to visiting faculty members. GCU is also preparing to launch a dedicated E-Services Portal to manage maintenance and other campus services, allowing repair requests and infrastructure issues to be processed without disrupting academic activities, while the university has separately begun digitising its alumni records as part of its broader digital transformation drive.
